Assignment 4

Intro
I would love to suggest that my birthday is just a normal day, but unfortunately it takes place on one of America’s most commercial driven holidays. On this day most people don’t go to work and most children don’t go to school. People give and some expect to receive gifts. Some kids believe a fat old man in a red suit with a large white beard will shoot down their chimney. Apparently, this man is supposed to leave some extravagant toy or violent video game under a fake tree, and escape the scene using flying reindeers – one reindeer even has a red nose. Many people believe this is the day Christian figure Jesus Christ was born so they may celebrate Christmas as a way to support that theory.  Jesus Christ is one of the most recognized religious figures to have potentially been born on this date.  On December 25, 1991, I was born and even though I like to think I’m the greatest thing to happen on earth ever, there are a lot of other things that have changed history during the time of my birth, especially in artistic ways. In this project I will attempt to highlight the most interesting stories and trends that show how life was on the date of my birth (in my opinion).
Interesting stories

On December 2, 1991 The New York Times cover story was about race relations. The articles title was ‘Black-white marriages rise, but social acceptance lags’. This article Discussed interracial marriage. As the US confronted persistent racial bigotry. Interracial couples were quietly trying to bridge two increasingly alienated worlds. Some didn’t even tell their parents that they were married and have children.

On December 3, 1991 Hulk Hogan defeated Undertaker to become 4th time WWF champion. My family has always supported the WWF/WWE and Hulk Hogan was my older brother’s favorite wrestler of all time.

On December 7, 1991 The New York times published a story about the climate around sports and the influence entertainers had on the population then. The article title was ‘H.I.V. tests up 60 percent since the disclosure from Magic Johnson’. This article stated that the number of people being tested for the HIV virus had increased almost 60 percent in New York City and had risen sharply throughout the nation in the month since Earvin (Magic) Johnson announced that he was infected with the virus.

On December 25, 1991 Mikhail Gorbachev resigned as president of the Soviet Union (the union itself is dissolved the next day). Ukraine’s referendum is finalized and Ukraine officially leaves the Soviet Union.

Fashion:
In the early 90’s people were wearing a lot of different colors. I assume the popular thing to do was to not match colors. Although, this was also during the rise of explicit Hip hop and many people influenced by NWA type musicians were wearing only black and white.

People were also wearing Michael Jordan’s signature Nike shoe. The pair that was released in 91 are referred to as the “Jordan VI”. Here’s the commercial

Music:

The Michael Jackson "Black or White" video generated controversy by the video's last four minutes in which Jackson smashes windows, vandalizes a car and causes a building to explode, as well as suggestively grabs his crotch repeatedly while dancing. Classic MJ. You can check out the video here

Hip hop artist Tupac Shakur started his solo career with his debut album 2Pacalypse Now. The album generated significant controversy due to its strong theme of police brutality. One the most influential songs from the album here

Movies:

The John Singleton directed Boyz N the Hood was released in 1991 to critical acclaim. The movie has been noted as culturally significant since its release. Here’s the trailer for the movie

The James Cameron directed Terminator 2: Judgment Day was released in 1991. The film's production costs were $102 million, which, at the time, was the highest ever. Here’s the trailer
Conclusion

On the date of my birth there were a lot of things already in motion to change the way we see entertainment and things that impacted politics as well. Of course, some of the issues of race and HIV awareness are still issues that we struggle with today, but we are still making progress, which is good. The King of Pop has died. And after my birth all the terminator movies stopped looking good. But at least Michael Jordan and Nike are still dishing out new shoes, and Ice Cube still looks the same after 20 years (minus the Jerry curl). Everything has been enhanced over time as far as our acceptance of certain people or certain forms of art, and that's what I learned from studying the time around the date of my birth.

Assignment 3

News websites have become the premier platform for being informed. Many people use sites like Google News and Huffington Post to stay informed. In this post, I will compare the two and give my reasons for why one is better than the other.

On my initial visit to the Huffington Post website I was very impressed by their website layout and design. It’s very simple and inviting. They have a list of general topics on top of the feed of blog news. It has every possible topic you could want relating to the news. From entertainment news to medical and political news, the Huffington Post’s has a wide variety of things they cover. The Huffington Post also has their own editorial staff that does their stories. This is good, because it’s more personal to people who credit the Huffington Post as their primary news source. The Huffington Post has developed their own following, and since it’s all run by real people, it’s safe to assume these real people have their own agenda, much like other news programs and websites that have their own stories. This can be good if someone wants to reaffirm their beliefs through the way they interpret the news on the Huffington Post, but the argument could be made that the Huffington Post way of delivering the news may be biased to a degree.

When I made my way to the Google News site I was surprised by how simple yet unorganized it looked compared to the Huffington Post website. There was a similar layout but the Google News site wasn’t as easy on the eyes. The top stories were on the home site just like the Huffington Post so they seem similar in many ways in my opinion. One thing that stood out for me was the fact that the site only featured links to post published elsewhere. This is a good thing when looking for different opinions from different sources on the same topic, but can be bad because those sites (from my understanding) are chosen by popularity.

I think Google News is the site I will use to get my information. I think it’s good to get different views from different sites that may have different agendas. The Huffington Post is just another site in Google News’s feed. Huffington Post is  a good site but Google News provides more options as far as content is concerned.

Assignment 2

For this assignment I wanted to see Facebook do something radical to someone’s feed. I don’t use Facebook a lot so I watched my friend Kamou use his Facebook. He uses it more than anyone else I know and when I mentioned the possible experiments to him, he was fascinated. I never told him what the results of those experiments might be though, and I never explained the articles we read for class to him.

He really liked the idea of seeing what happened when he took a break from liking things, so we took that road. After the first few days he noticed that he was getting more updates from people rather than celebrity news, or sports. Here are a few more things we noticed.

  • ·         Less post about brands
  • ·         Less post about current news
  • ·         More baby post, happy birthday post, and happy post from people he didn’t interact with
  • ·         More overall post from people he interacted with

He began to ask me, does how many times he visited a page a factor in this experiment. So he told me he would continue not liking things on Facebook, but he would visit only the sports pages daily. He didn’t comment or like any of the interesting post he came across, but he would click links to main articles.

In only a few days we began to see a few more sports post on his feed, or maybe we’re just overreacting. People he didn’t interact with popped up more often now, especially when they were talking about the cowboys, Adrian Peterson , ect. Here are a few thinks we noticed.
·         Slightly more post from the pages he visited more

  • ·         Less post from people he interacted with
  • ·         More post from people about topics on pages he visited the most
  • ·         Less post about brands not featured on, or associated with the pages he visited the most

Today he liked a Worldstar Hip Hop post so that’s the end of our Facebook experiment. Tell me what you think.

Brent Christmas (@1angryunicorn) : Assignment 1

For this first assignment I decided to gather three tweets from three different verified accounts on twitter and give my opinion of each. These accounts are operated by influential individuals with considerable fan bases within social media.
The first tweet to catch my attention while pursuing this assignment was delivered from the account of famous Astrophysicist and TV personality Neil deGrasse Tyson (@neiltyson). I've copied and pasted the tweet below:
"When a coincidence seems amazing, that's because the human mind isn’t wired to naturally comprehend probability & statistics."
This tweet, like many of Tyson's tweets, has amassed at least 1000 re-tweets and favorites. I enjoy the way he entertains his followers with witty statements that pertain to many different aspects of our society. Many of Tyson's followers attempt to engage in conversation with him, usually to further support his theories. This is an example of twitter being used to entertain and inform the masses of ones factual knowledge and theories about specific subjects.
The second tweet I stumbled across is from Hip Hop artist and TV personality Riff Raff (@JODYHiGHROLLER). Riff Raff has established a loyal fan base by being extremely active on social media. This man, or those who represent his twitter account, have already posted almost 50,000 tweets since 2009. Recently he tweeted about a song he is about to release to attract attention to it. I've copied and pasted the tweet below:
